A thorough physical examination plays an important role in maintaining a horse’s general health and allows for the investigation of the presence of disease. Using baseline faecal egg counts and other more comprehensive tests (such as a faecal egg count reduction tests), screening for parasites is performed before recommending a specific deworming strategy. It is important that horses are vaccinated against major diseases that can be fatal. Vaccinations for African horsesickness, botulism, equine herpes virus-1, equine influenza, lawsonia intracellularis, rabies, salmonella, strangles, tetanus and West Nile virus are available.
